Our house has an infant-almost-toddler who is an enthusiastic self-feeder so things get very messy. Zach LOVES the act of feeding himself, even if 75% of the food ends up the floor. The space underneath Zach’s high chair is pretty much always crunchy and/or sticky. Veggie straws, bits of noodles, chunks of cheese, broken crackers… it’s a buffet of finger foods down there. And I’ll be totally honest about the efficiency with which I sweep it all up: not very. Maybe once a day? Or less? I usually keep up for a day or two, and then by mid-week, there are days-old crumbs under there. Should I be ashamed? I probably should be. Part of the reason I procrastinate on the cleaning is that when I do have a chance to sweep it using our battery-powered sweeper, someone is napping and the thing is kinda loud, so I put it off. Then he wakes up, and then I’m too busy keeping him from getting into ALL THE THINGS to sweep. Then it’s mealtime again and he’s just going to ADD to the mess, so really, what’s the POINT of cleaning it NOW?
That’s the vicious cycle of messes these days.
I try to accept the fact that this time in our lives is just going to include lots of crumbs! It’s okay! We’ll have pristine floors again someday and we’ll miss the babies and small kids and wish our floors were messy again (okay, maybe not that last part, but I’m sure the rest is true). And while I DO try to embrace the mess, I do feel like I’m on a continuous search of a Magical And Easy Solution To The Food Piles.
I was offered a chance to try a new product from Swiffer and immediately I got excited because CLEAN FLOORS WOOHOO! The Swiffer Sweep and Trap is a brand new product at Target that claims it will clean it all, big and small.
How is this new sweeper different than the traditional Swiffer? It has rotating blades (soft so they won’t scratch hardwood!) to pick up large particles and flicks them into a dirt bin. It’s just as quick to use as a broom, but it cleans much better thanks to the attached Swiffer Sweeper dry cloth that traps dirt, dust, and hair that brooms can leave behind. This innovative combination cleans up big and small messes in a single swipe, and uses no batteries or power. It’s also very lightweight, compact enough to hang neatly in a closet, and the rotating blades and dirt bin are easy to remove and clean.
So after all of those promises, let’s see how it handled Zach’s Mess After Dinner One Night.
I’d say that was a success. I’m excited about the possibility of having no more excuses about sweeping with my rather noisy battery-powered sweeper because the Sweep and Trap is nice and quiet. For quick clean-ups under the table after meals, this is exactly what I was looking for! And yes, I get a thrill from a sweeper that makes cleaning my floors easier, but hey, this is my life now. Clean floors are GOOD.
