I take a lot of pictures. My Lightroom catalog has somewhere over 20,000 photos and most of those are just from the last 5 years. I’ve developed a fairly organized system of regularly downloading pictures from my phone in recent months (since that’s sadly where most of my pictures come from these days, I miss you, my fancy digital SLR!) because I am PARANOID about losing photos if I leave them on my phone. I’m hoping to start creating photobooks from each year for each of the kids so I can have hard copies of all the moments I capture. I also order prints for our walls now and then and swap out older pictures of the kids for newer ones (though I am REALLY behind on this. Just last week I finally got a few pictures up of Zach and he’s 9 months old. Whooops, sorry buddy!) But I’m pretty good at keeping up with pictures. I love them and I have a system in place.
Then… there are the videos. Hundreds of random video clips from my phone, scattered on my hard drive, no rhyme or reason to them. I did start editing/converting them but it takes FOREVER and it’s not nearly as fun as editing with Lightroom presets or Instagram filters. They’re fantastic moments too! But they are largely ignored, which makes me a little sad (but obviously not sad enough to DO much about it.) I end up just renaming them and dumping them into a dated folder and nobody usually ends up watching them ever again because they’re all like 20 seconds long and there are SO MANY OF THEM. I tell myself that someday I’ll sit down with a video program and splice them all together and make something out of them but it’s a daunting task and would take HOURS and HOURS and no. I’ll probably never actually do that.
What if there was a way to easily combine those short and random video clips into a larger video? Nicely edited! Perhaps with music! All those videos consolidated into a longer video, easy to share with friends and family on Facebook, Twitter, and my blog!
Well, THERE IS and I got to try it out and let me tell you, I am making this a Thing I Will Do With My Videos because it was easy and the resulting video was fantastic. The service is called Yourkidvid. You send them your video clips and they bring all the Hollywood production magic to turn your memories into cinematic experiences your friends actually want to watch. Heck, that YOU want to watch. Color balance, graphics, perfect sound, music- my stupid cell phone videos look GREAT now.
I’m not ashamed to say that I a little teary watching this. THE SOFT MUSIC. MY LITTLE BUDDY.
The process was so simple. I uploaded the video clips I wanted to use according to their instructions and guidelines and they did the rest. A few days later, the final product was posted on YouTube and I got a link so I could watch it, download the file, or share on other social media sites.
There are two different levels for video editing- lite and premium. (My video is a premium video.) You can read more about the differences on the YourKidVid website.
I am really excited about the potential for this service. It would be perfect as a digital Year-In-Review Letter! They also offer gift cards so you can give the gift of a fancy hand-crafted movie- perfect for a baby shower gift, new mom, birthdays, Mother’s day… endless possibilities. AND: no more excuses for hundreds of random video files cluttering my hard drive.
Check it out and start uploading your videos for your own mini-movie! I have a 20% coupon code exclusively for my readers: YKV-A23F (code is good through 1/31/14). And, best of all, I’m giving away a free Premium video! (no expiration on redemption) Just leave a comment telling me this: What would the subject be for YOUR first Yourkidvid video?
Winner will be selected at random from comments left before 11:59PM Pacific time on 1/31/14.
Disclaimer: I was offered a free premium video for the purposes of reviewing and writing this post. But my opinions are my own, and I would never recommend a product I wouldn’t purchase with my own money.
