7 quick takes: Christmas Break In Review Edition

All hail the list post!

1. WE DID IT WE ALL REMAINED MOSTLY ALMOST HEALTHY FOR BOTH CHRISTMAS EVE AND CHRISTMAS DAY! Just a few sniffles and some coughing from Zach, and everyone was a little bit tired, but overall we were good. I was seriously doubting that we’d get through the holidays without another ridiculous round of sickness. But! Christmas happened! Hooray!

2. Every year right before Christmas, Santa comes to our neighborhood on a firetruck. Each kid gets called up individually to climb into the truck (!) and sit on Santa’s lap (!!) and they get a gift especially for them (one that we give to the organizers beforehand, obviously, but still. !!!) We missed last year because of Vomitfest 2012, so this is the first year that Audrey was really aware of the event and she was LOVING it. Santa even came down off the truck at first and greeted the kids and it was awesome.

Audrey: about to pee her pants with excitement. Maggie: watching the firetruck warily, wondering if THIS IS EVEN SAFE. Typical.

okay, NOW she’s excited!

Christmas Christmas

3. Christmas Eve was a nice, mellow day at home. The girls and I gave ourselves fancy holiday manicures, there were naps in the afternoon, and then we spent the evening with the extended family. Babies in bowties! Matching pajamas! Fed the reindeer before bed!

Holiday manicures for Maggie & me (Audrey's napping but she'll get hers later!)

My nephew is just ridiculous.

Audrey ate about a dozen or so Hershey Kisses for dinner. It worked out well, as I’m sure you can imagine.

We were already tired and Christmas hadn’t really officially started yet.

Christmas Eve Blackjack (very tired eyes, buddy)

Reindeer food!

Santa needs his Amazon Prime privileges revoked. Merry Christmas!!!!!!
Santa is now banned from using Amazon Prime.

4. So Santa came and then there were more presents at Grandma’s and also good food and then MORE presents with Dan’s family and we were gone for 10 hours and came home to a LAUGHABLY DESTROYED living room but oh well, we had fun.

Heeeere we go...!

Grandpa Zach

Purple zebra print is totally him, don't you think?

I... guess someone should start dealing with this. More coffee first. (also a trunk full of stuff in the garage, good gracious.)
I… wow.

5. It took us a solid 2 days of cleaning up, playing with new toys, opening packages, sorting through wrapping paper to make sure nothing important got thrown out, etc to get the house back in order-ish. Then after that it was a whole week of Christmas Break With Daddy Home which was FANTASTIC for me and oh-so-painful yesterday when real life started again. (Having another adult in the house to keep track of the baby and make sure he’s not eating ornaments or barrettes or paper or whatever else the girls have left on the floor is SO NICE.) Things did get a little hairy a few times- it was cold outside and everyone kind of developed a cough/cold thing so cabin fever set in. But we found ways to fight it.

How to battle cabin fever

Good morning

Seriously. I could eat him. He's ridiculous.

Battling Daddy

They painted the styrofoam inserts from my food processor box & made a house (complete with a hot tub) for their stuffed animals. #cabinfever
All the new toys from Christmas and they constructed a house for their stuffed animals out of styrofoam inserts from a box. It kept them occupied for over an hour AND THEY DIDN’T FIGHT WHAT NO WAY. ???!!!

6. New Years Eve was mellow and relaxed and that was just fine for us. Audrey had a nasty cold (turns out it’s a sinus infection, first antibiotic prescription of 2014, hooray!) and everyone was worn out. So Dan headed out to pick up fancy takeout for a grown-up dinner, I played XBox until 10ish, then we went to bed. New Years Eve For Old People and we’re okay with that!

Happy New Year, fools.

7. GIFTS FOR THE MAMA! I got a massage gift card, a variety of chocolate-y treats from the girls, some jewelry (Maggie picked it all out and I seriously LOVE it all, she’s amazing.), a silly t-shirt from Dan, a photo coffee mug of the kids, a bunch of gift cards, a fake lens coffee mug, and a Cuisinart 11-cup food processor I CANNOT WAIT TO USE IT! and probably other stuff I’m forgetting, I’m spoiled.

From the girls. That's why they're my favorite.

A tshirt from Dan. Haaaaaa YES.

Now Christmas break is over and all that’s left to put away is the Christmas tree (well, and the outside lights but it was 6 degrees outside this morning so THAT’S not happening for a while). Everyone is back to school and work and I already have Vacation Planning on my to-do list because SUMMER WHERE ARE YOOOOUUU??

That photo of the Hershey Kisses kicking in made me laugh ridiculously hard. In fact, I’m laughing still.

What a great review of your holidays! I love it.

    Your kids are ridiculously cute.

I love the “But we found ways to fight it.” followed by all three kids riding Dan.

It looks and sounds like it was a great time!

Oh, and we had planned a similarly adult (quite, relaxed, early to bed) New Years Eve, but it ended up that we were about to head up to bed at 11:57PM NYE — when I noticed the time, I turned on a countdown and we rang in the New Year awake, then headed to bed. But it definitely wasn’t in the plan to see 12:00AM! Heh.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and best wishes for a lack of germs in 2014!
