The girls had a sleepover at my parent’s house this weekend. As you can see, they were very nervous and not at all excited about the idea.
Oh, wait. Nevermind. THEY WERE REALLY REALLY EXCITED OMG IT’S ALL THEY TALKED ABOUT ALL WEEK!
(And I won’t lie: we were pretty thrilled with the whole idea too.)
So off they went, and then off WE went to dinner. Alone. Leisurely. With an hour wait at the bar and we didn’t even CARE. Of course… neither of us actually drink alcohol at the moment. Dan is allergic to beer and isn’t a fan of hard liquor, and I’m a billion years pregnant. So we were the dorks sitting there drinking iced tea and cranberry juice/sprite and talking about baby boy names, but we were okay with it.
And the hour wait for our table was totally worth it because NOODLES. RICE. FILET MIGNON. And that ridiculously awesome orange-y colored dipping sauce. It was so delicious, all of it.
One of the best parts of a date night where the kids aren’t actually at the house is that we could go home at 8:00 and get into our pajamas and not feel like losers because we arrived home before the kids were in bed. It didn’t matter! It also didn’t matter that I went to bed “to read” at 9pm and promptly fell asleep by 9:20! I’m a rock star, is basically what I’m saying. (Dude, I was up at 4:30am Saturday morning for no reason other than I had an itchy belly and the baby was kicking me like crazy. I was exhausted.)
The next morning, we slept until 8- EIGHT! I cannot even remember the last time I slept past 6:30- and we got showers and headed to breakfast.
I won’t lie: it was weird waking to a quiet house. We both commented on it a few times. But the giant delicious pancake and the home fries that didn’t fit into the picture made things less weird. Then we went shopping at Target and came home and I sat on the couch for the rest of the afternoon while Dan did some random baby prep stuff upstairs (put the crib back together, rearranged our bedroom so the pack and play will fit better, etc)
So let’s recap what I did while the girls were gone: ate, slept more, ate again, shopped, play XBox, and ate snacks. Weekend Of Awesome: CHECK.
You’ll be happy to know that the girls also had an awesome time. The few times I checked in, they were getting their hair done, their nails painted, and building a tent. And they had chocolate ice cream with sprinkles on it. They came home tired but happy.
It was a much needed weekend for everyone, I think. For me, it came at a good time. Dan’s been traveling a lot these past few weeks and I’ve been working and shuttling small people to doctor appointments for their broken feet (LOOKING AT YOU, AUDREY.) and finishing up getting baby clothes washed and sorted, etc etc so every other weekend lately has seemed like Playing Catch Up rather than enjoying things. So making myself SIT and DO NOTHING for a few hours yesterday afternoon was hard on my brain but oh my, it was glorious. And Dan and I got to talk more about baby names without anybody distracting us and we’ve narrowed things down a little bit (but no final decisions till he’s born, I don’t think!) I feel like these next few weeks are the calm before the storm of the baby arriving… and looking at our calendar, it won’t be very calm at all.
So hopefully this weekend’s effects last a little while!
