Because everyone else is doing it! And I like lists! And I did it last year!
1. What did you do in 2012 that you’d never done before?
My sweet, tiny child was admitted to the hospital and she had to undergo surgery. DO NOT RECOMMEND! I went on a cruise with Dan. RECOMMEND! I had a miscarriage. DO NOT RECOMMEND! I visited New Orleans. RECOMMEND!
2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I had to go back to see if I even MADE a list or anything last year, and it turns out I did. The fact that I couldn’t remember probably doesn’t bode well for my success, but let’s check, shall we?
Lose 15 pounds and run a race. Okay so I was actually not doing terrible with this in the first part of 2012! The winter wasn’t bad, weather-wise, and I think I was running pretty regularly, working my way up to a good 3-mile time. I was even signed up for my first 5K, which was on my birthday in April! But, then I got a nasty cold so I decided not to push myself and make my first race a miserable one (my head was still filled with Delights from that cold the morning of the race, so it was the right decision, I think.) Then May hit, and we spent a lot of time in the hospital with Audrey, then I got pregnant, miscarried, then got pregnant again…. so I think my last official day of running was sometime in the middle of May. So. Fail on this one, but for very good reasons :)
Travel! This one I did! Yay! Our cruise, and then New Orleans in November. BAM. DONE.
Our House. Ha. HAAAAAA. Yeah so much fail on this one. I got about halfway through redecorating Maggie’s room when we started having Serious Talks about having another baby, which meant that the girls would eventually be sharing a room. So I stopped after I got the walls finished because we have new furniture to buy (bunk beds! woohoo!) and things will be rearranged quite a bit. All of this will be happening very soon, so at least I can check it off my list in early 2013! We DID get our deck rebuilt though, so that was pretty darn exciting. We love love love it- having steps going to the yard was perfect this summer, and we spent many summer evenings hanging out up there. (This was a much easier project for us since we just had to fork over the money we saved and have someone else do the work, rather than actually DO the work ourselves. So. ha.) I also apparently misjudged my time and motivation and thought I’d redo the powder room this year. HA. Nope. Haven’t even touched it. Still has chipped paint around the mirror! Whatever. Maybe this year!
Organization. I did a few things around the house, actually. My kitchen cabinets are nicely organized (still look great a year later!) and I cleaned out a few junk areas of the house over time. There are a few places that are still a disaster (our office, OMG YOU GUYS, it’s actually hilarious!) but most of that was recent between Christmas and some baby stuff. It’s on my list for the coming weeks.
Work. I had a fantastic year with my business, and I even just a few weeks ago hit a financial goal I set for myself! Which is good, considering I’m about to take a very long maternity leave. heh.
Finding and regularly going to a church. Oh I’m so embarrassed about this one. Total fail. We started out okay- went to a few new places. Then someone was always sick, or we had a big weekend full of plans with family and needed Sunday morning to recover/get ready/etc. Then there was Easter Sunday when we went to church and Audrey screamed the ENTIRE TIME in the nursery and I spent most of the service going back and forth between the sanctuary and her room. That was fun and rewarding! Look… I know being an adult and making excuses for not going to church with our kids is ridiculous. But honestly? A lot of the time? Sunday is our ONLY day to stay home. Every day during the week is filled with work and school and daycare and other boring grown-up stuff, so come Sunday, we just want to hang out in our jammies. So. I don’t know. Sometimes I feel like family time IS like church for me, you know? It restores me to have us all home and playing and just BEING instead of DOING STUFF. I pray a lot! I’m good with God! But, I also want my kids to have the same kind of church family I had growing up… so I know this needs to be a priority, no matter how much we all want to sleep in on Sunday morning. Something to work on, I guess.
Finish converting videos. I never even THOUGHT about doing this, even once. heh.
A baby? Um. So yeah! That’s happening! :)
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
My sister had a baby boy in September! I’m an aunt! Plus a lot of friends had babies- firsts, seconds, thirds, FOURTHS. We’re in that phase of life where people we know are done getting married and they’re all making humans. It’s fun!
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Dan’s aunt lost her long, long battle with breast cancer in May, and unfortunately we missed the funeral because Audrey had surgery that day. Basically, May sucked horribly.
5. What countries did you visit?
According to our tour guide on our hike excursion in St Maarten/St Martin, we’ve been to the Netherlands AND France! I think she’s nuts, but whatever :)
6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you didn’t have in 2012?
More downtime. And I know it’s coming, with the arrival of the baby. Yes, babies are A LOT OF WORK, I remember. But a lot of the time, even with Maggie running around the house while I was caring for baby Audrey, I found myself doing a lot of sitting and tv-watching and just… being, you know? Things have changed a little bit recently with Maggie’s school schedule (mid-day pickup from kindergarten totally screws up my day! yay!) but I think even with that, I’m looking forward to less on my To Do list and less back-of-my-mind “Oh crap, I need to email that client about that thing I forgot to ask them!” stuff. A break from work is going to be very welcome. (Remind me of this during 2am feedings, mmmkay? ha)
7. What dates from 2012 will be etched upon your memory, and why?
May 22nd was Audrey’s surgery. June 21st I miscarried. July 28th I found out I was pregnant again! November 12th we saw the little baby dude on the sonogram.
8. What was your biggest achievement of this year?
SURVIVING. heh. We joke a little bit about how bad this year was, but honestly, we KNOW it could have been worse and we’re heading into 2013 in a very good way. 2012 WAS a year in which we dealt with some crappy stuff, no doubt. But, we also had a lot of good things and I’m constantly trying to focus on those instead of dwelling on the bad.
9. What was your biggest failure?
I feel like I haven’t been the best friend to some people I love, especially recently, just because I’m distracted by my own Stuff. I know it happens, but I wish I had more mental space for chatting and emails and texts and more ACTUAL time and space for getting together in person. LIFE. SO BUSY! Blargh.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
We ALL just got through a miserable two weeks, actually. A terrible stomach flu that hit all of us right before Christmas, followed by some gross colds this past week. I’m finally over it (9 days of snot! yay!) and I think everyone else is on their way. Thankfully it was nothing major but dude, it sucked. Other than that and my miscarriage, I’ve been pretty healthy this year. So far this pregnancy has been smooth sailing.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Our new van! Well, we’re leasing it, but same difference. Yes, it’s a minivan, but you guys, we really like it. It’s so convenient! And it’s like driving a spaceship with all the fancy features and crazy electronic gadgets inside! Also, I already mentioned it, but our new deck has been wonderful. So happy we did it.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Dan. He got me through the summer when I was hormonal and emotional and scared and then got me through the first trimester of this pregnancy when all I could do was moan on the couch in nauseated agony while the girls ran around the house like banshees. He does dishes and cleans up and does his own laundry and ironing and he’s just the best.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
The American Political Machine. Full stop.
14. Where did most of your money go?
SIGH. Daycare. And our mortgage. Sadly… it might be a pretty close tie. heh.
15. What did you get really excited about?
Going to New Orleans! I knew this would need to be my “last hurrah” kind of thing before the baby is born in the spring, so I wanted to make the most of the trip. It came at the perfect time for me, and I was so so so excited for it. And it lived up to the expectations :)
16. What song will always remind you of 2012?
You’re gonna laugh, but Taylor Swift’s “We’re Never Ever Ever Getting Back Together” because the girls sing it and dance around the room and it’s just the freaking best. Even if that song is a terrible earworm.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you: a) happier or sadder? b) thinner or fatter? c) richer or poorer?
A: Happier. B: HAAAA I’m 26 weeks pregnant, WHAT DO YOU THINK? C) Richer, and we’re thankful.
18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
I wish we’d had a slightly less insane summer and the girls and I could have gone to the playground more. A little thing, but with all I had going on physically those weeks, it was really tough for me to get them out the door for Fun Stuff. The end of the summer came too quickly!
19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Yelling at the kids. I know it happens, and I know that they do things to warrant corrections. But sometimes I’m just too tired to react appropriately and I wish I could yell less. (Thankfully they seem to be okay and not scarred for life. heh.)
20. How will/did you spend Christmas?
Various family gatherings, none of them more than a 15 minute drive from home. IT WAS EXCELLENT.
21. What was your favorite TV program?
I did a LOT of television show streaming via Netflix and Amazon, especially this summer (summer programming is terrible!) The West Wing goes at the top of the list as my favorite this year, but I also enjoyed Hart of Dixie (cute, fluffy, some eye candy!) and I’m almost caught up with Revenge. “Regular” tv shows we’ve been loving: Scandal, Happy Endings, Big Bang Theory.
22. What was the best book you read?
Gone Girl, like just about everyone else! I’m a slow reader, not so much because I actually READ slowly, just that I only get a few pages into a book each night before I fall asleep. So finishing a book is a huge accomplishment for me, seriously. ha
23. What did you want and get?
I wanted to have another baby and I am. Rest assured I do not take this gift for granted.
24. What did you want and not get?
This question makes me feel greedy! But I really really have my eye on a new camera lens. It hasn’t happened yet, but perhaps this spring as a reward for birthing a third child? heh.
25. What was your favorite film of 2012?
I’m terrible at keeping up with movies, but I did see The Hunger Games in the theaters twice (once with friends, again with my mom and mother-in-law) and dang it, it was GREAT.
26. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 33 and of course I blogged about my birthday because DUH.
27. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
28. How would you describe your personal fashion concept of 2012?
bwahahahaaaaa this is a funny question considering I break a sweat putting on pants now. Um. Fashion concept of 2012: Is it comfy? Wear it!
29. What kept you sane?
Twitter. I love you guys.
30. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012.
Letting go of control is okay. The HARDEST thing for me, hands down. I’m getting better. Kinda.
