totally! random! Tuesday!

Life is busy! And very very good! Lots to tell! Here are five things I can think of right now!

1. I officially registered for my first 5K on my birthday (April 14! Mark your calendars! I like sparkly things and chocolate! Or sparkly chocolate!). I’ll admit, I’m a little nervous. I’ve been running semi-regularly on the treadmill we bought last month (yay Craigslist!) but I have a hard time staying motivated on that thing. After a mile or so I am like OMG WHEN IS THIS GOING TO BE DONE? And I’m even watching Gilmore Girls re-runs on the tv, but still: want to stop and eat a sandwich. I do so much better when I’m running outside and I feel like I’m GOING somewhere. Running in place is for the birds. Or… the hamsters, I guess. Anyway. I’m happy that the weather has been cooperating lately and I’ve been able to run outside. Less than 4 weeks to build back up to running three miles! I did 2 miles in 20 minutes on Friday, so I’m definitely getting there.

2. I’m finally going to be an aunt!!! I’ve known since JANUARY, and while I suck horribly at keeping my own pregnancies a secret (I have always told by 8 weeks, even though I said I wouldn’t. heh), I obeyed my sister’s wishes and waited to talk about it publicly until she was ready herself. I’m a good sister like that. Where’s my cookie? She’s due in September, right before Audrey’s 2nd (!!!) birthday. She’s going to (hopefully!) find out the gender at the end of April. I say girl, she says boy. I say I have a basement full of pink clothes that would be AWESOME to share with her!

We are all super excited about this news, of course, regardless of the gender. BABYYYYY!!! And I can’t wait to see my teeny tiny sister all big and pregnant this summer. heeee ;)

3. Last Wednesday night around 12:30am, Audrey woke up barking like a seal. CROUP. NOOOOOO! Not only did she have the tell-tale cough, but she was wheezing pretty hard. You guys, it was scary. We’ve been so lucky and haven’t had very many panicky kid situations and I’ll admit, I was a little bit freaked out. She also had a slight fever, but of course ALL THREE of our thermometers had dead batteries. Great! But after I talked to our pediatrician (at 1am, bless her, she has little kids too so man, did I feel bad that she was on call!) and we sat outside in the cool night air for a bit, her wheezing calmed down and she slept the rest of the night. We were already scheduled to go in for her 18 month well-visit, so they checked her out and yes, it was croup. And she also had an ear infection in one ear (??? NO IDEA any of that was going on. Seriously. This kid is a champ. Sometimes I wonder if having reflux as an infant toughened her up or something.) So we were given a prescription for antibiotics for the ear, and three doses prednisone for the wheezing. And no daycare on Friday for her.

Have you ever been alone with a toddler hopped up on steroids while you’re trying to work? Here’s what that looks like.

Casualties of working at home with Audrey

Someone figured out how to make herself taller so she can reach my desk. She ripped up a contract!!

Someone can climb up the big chairs now. Crap.

You’ll have to use your imagination and add the shrieking and running around yourself. But you get the idea.

Honestly though, it was a pretty good day. She was INSANE and skipped her nap (which she NEVER does. EVER.) and I only got about 4 hours of work in that day. But I rarely ever have time with just Audrey and me, so I took advantage of it. She made a huge mess of herself at lunch (who uses PEACH JUICE like BODY LOTION, AUDREY???!!) so I gave her a bath and we had quite the time splashing and giggling and being silly. Just us. It was nice.

From last week: midday bath!

I skipped her last dose of prednisone because SERIOUSLY. FOURTEEN AND A HALF HOURS OF NON-STOP TODDLER MAYHEM? No. And she was doing so much better after just one dose. I’m assuming her ear is better now too, even though she probably only ingested about half of the antibiotic. She is a terrible medicine-taker, lots of spitting and screaming and swatting. But she seems to be doing great, so thank goodness for that.

4. Thanks to some well-timed work-related things and tax return season, we’ll be rebuilding our deck FINALLY. Or rather, our super-handy construction dude neighbors will be rebuilding it. Here’s what it looks like now:

our fake patio

It’s not… BAD, really. But it’s not even a deck- more of a balcony. No steps going down to the yard which is suddenly a huge pain with the girls wanting to play outside all the time, and it’s not very big. Our grill and a small table with a few chairs is just about all we can fit on there. And as you can see, eventually, it would be FABULOUS to have a nice patio under the deck for parties and things. But for now, a nice, new maintenance-free deck that doesn’t give us all splinters with steps going to the yard? PERFECT. I am ridiculously excited about this.

5. Maggie is officially registered for morning kindergarten in the fall. !!!!! If you follow me on Twitter, you’ll know that there was All Kind Of Drama surrounding the new registration process this year (lottery tickets! last minute papers that needed signed that they didn’t tell anyone about! everyone’s feathers ruffled!) but in the end, we got the morning session, which is what I wanted. Afternoon wouldn’t have been the end of the world or anything, but morning will work a little easier with my daycare shuffle for Audrey and some work stuff. Plus… I’ll be honest… if she was in afternoon kindergarten, I would have to take her to school (no midday buses) and I would have been a little bit bummed to miss out on the traditional Getting On The School Bus For The First Time pictures. So I’m looking forward to making a huge deal out of it and taking a gazillion pictures and being a huge sobbing mess because OH MAH BAYBBEEEEE IS ON THE BUSSSSSS!!!!

So! That’s enough about me. What’s going on with you?

Apparently Jamie and Audrey subscribe to the same skin care regimen, because he has been known to do the exact same thing with peach juice. AAAAGGGH. STICKY.

Does he also use it as hair gel? That’s extra special!

No, that’s strictly a job for marinara sauce as far as he’s concerned.

  3. Yay, congrats to your sister! I’m also due in September and can’t wait for this pregnancy to be over – it’s not rainbows and unicorns like I was led to believe!!! :|

Congrats!!! And don’t let the beginning of pregnancy bum you out- it kinda sucks at times :( You’re sick and feeling gross a lot of time, and it doesn’t really feel real for a long while. Even when I was pregnant with Audrey, it took a while to feel bonded to her. Once you get further into it and you have a sonogram and start feeling the baby moving and start making plans and picking names… it gets a lot better :) (And if you never love pregnancy, don’t feel bad either. I’m not a huge fan of it, myself. A few positive points, but mostly I was miserable and fat and just blargh. ha)

No midday busses? That’s weird. When I went to half-day kindergarten (over 20 years ago, I guess), there was a smaller bus that dropped off morning kindergarteners and picked up afternoon ones.

Also, my sister is pregnant, TOO! Yay for nieces or nephews!

Yeah they started that last year- budget cuts across the state, so that was the first thing to go. I guess they assume that someone has to be home anyway to get the kids off the bus at lunch time (or put them ON the bus for afternoon kindergarten) so now they just have to drive to the school instead. Annoying :/

  5. We have the same tea pot! And that cute little whale spout reminded me I need to order one! My child is forever braining herself on the bath spout. And of course, being that she’s child #1 I did not know of MAGICAL WHALE SPOUT COVER! Of course, Amazon.ca is sold out.

  6. Congrats on your future niece or nephew!
I’m so glad you got morning kindergarten. I wish I would have known that I didn’t have to wait in line for it, LOL!
