cousins
Maggie, Wednesday night at dinner: “Mommy, do you have any plans on Saturday?”
(Um. When did she turn twelve? All proper and fancy with her speaking. Geez.)
When I told her no, we didn’t have any major plans, she immediately sprung her brilliant plan on us: a playdate with her cousin! Yes! Mom! Please!
A few texts and a phone call later, and Madison was coming over to play.
Madison is my cousin’s daughter, only eleven months older than Maggie. Maddy and Maggie been in daycare/preschool together since they were both babies. She’s in kindergarten now but still comes to daycare a few afternoons a week, so they still see each other quite a bit. And apparently cooked up this playdate idea all on their own last week. LOVE IT.
There was much giggling and squealing and about six outfit changes each and Audrey followed them around for about three hours. They sat, huddled together over a My Little Pony Nintendo DS game.
I gotta say- it was VERY NICE to have someone entertaining Maggie for the afternoon. SHE GETS BORED OF US AND EVERYTHING AND HER TOYS AND LIFE. Suddenly with Madison around, her old boring toys (that she got 3 weeks ago at Christmas) were Super Awesome Things again. And you know, it was nice to sit on the couch for a little while and do nothing while Audrey napped and the girls played. AAAAAAAHHH.
They colored in Maggie’s new Barbie fashion stencil book. Very Important Decisions about colors and patterns and outfits.
Some of my favorite memories growing up are with my own cousins- Madison’s mom included!- so I am thrilled that Maggie has such a close friend who is also family. As I watched them play and listened to them giggling and whispering over who-knows-what, I imagined what they might be like in another ten years. Still friends? Still whispering secrets and giggling? Still bugging my cousin and me for a playdate?
I kind of really hope so.

That is so awesome. It will be fun to watch them grow up together!
I got to spend a lot of time with my cousins growing up, and I loved it. Lots of great memories! So I’m sad that my kids only have two sorta-first cousins whom they never get to see: George’s step-brother’s sons, who live in Hungary. There are quite a few third cousins (I think I read somewhere that my first cousins’ kids and my kids are third cousins? I’m not sure… it’s confusing! heh), but none of them live very close to us, so it’s not the same. Having both next-door neighbors with kids O’s and A’s age has been really nice in the sense that our kids pretty much love them like family. Hopefully we’ll get lucky and end up with great neighbors in the Burgh, too. :)

ha yeah the whole second/third/once removed cousin thing is crazy (reminds me of that random scene in Gilmore Girls at Richard & Emily’s vowel renewal… if you know what I’m talking about, I’ll love you forever. ha) Of course to simplify things for Maggie, it’s just: cousin. heh
I love it!
One of Kalena’s very favorite people is her cousin Patrick who is 4 months older. I SO wish we lived closer together so they could see each other more often. It’s just so fun to watch them together.
Reminds me of my cousin and I!
I notice how Maggie has her boots on and her purse on her arm. Love it! She is so stylish. She definitely did not get that from her Grandma!

Yes. She’s very very fancy. ha
My SIL has 6 kids, the youngest will be 16 mo when our baby is born. I hope she likes her cousins, because they’re just 6 miles down the road, so I have a feeling they’ll be seeing quite a lot of each other!

oh that will be awesome, especially for you :) It is REALLY nice at the age Maggie is when they have playmates. She seriously gets bored with us and we can’t always play with her and she gets frustrated. So having other kids around is a HUGE help!
That’s wonderful! I hope my kids end up having cousins nearby. My cousins and I grew up in the same town and it was great.
That is SO fun! I wasn’t close with my cousins, but my daughter and her cousin are 6 months apart, so I hope to have something similar in my future!

I have such great memories of growing up with my cousins that I love it when Ezra sees his cousins and flips his lid with excitement.
What a lucky girl!!
I have a lot of cousins too – but only one that was my age. And he was a boy. (I am destined to be surrounded by boys FOREVER AND EVER. Your photos of coloring and purses amaze me.)
I’m not sure if Andrew will ever have cousins, but if he does, they will be much younger. Neither of our siblings are married, and none of my cousins have kids his age. Kyle’s cousins have kids, but only one close in age to Andrew, and they live all around the country.
So cute. I can’t wait until Anna is old enough to have friends. Right now she calls all other children “Boy,” even girls.

I think we got them at Sears of all places! We were at the mall looking for other stuff and she saw them, we loved them. She wears them ALL THE TIME.
