office makeover: a neverending project

About a bajillion years ago (okay, more like two months) I started our Office Makeover.

The before:

Since we moved into this house two years (!!) ago, the office has basically just been a storage room/dumping ground for whatever I couldn’t find a place for at the moment. Or was too lazy to put away. True, there was a desk in there, and a computer (from 2001! That only kinda runs!) But I never used the room for Work. I have a laptop that works just perfectly on the couch with my feet up and pillows around me. Who needs a cold, hard desk and boring, purple-gray walls?

But I decided it was time. New wall color, new/smaller desk, get rid of the ancient desktop computer. Hang our hard-earned (and expensive!) college and graduate school (Dan) diplomas on the wall. Do something with the Awesome Window Seat Of Great Potential.

Love that view!

The painting was the easy part. One weekend day and a little bit each evening that following week to get things finished. But then I had to get crazy and go and make CURTAINS.

Curtain preview. Worth the two iron burn marks on my left leg.

AND A PILLOW. What the WHAT?? I don’t even know myself anymore.

You guys. I JUST MADE THIS. #marthafreakingstewart

(Both of those projects were done using the no-sew method I found at Young House Love that I used for our dining room curtains. Because I don’t sew. I glue.)

And then. THEN! I went really nuts and I made a bench cushion. It wasn’t my original intention to get so darn crafty on this project (I figured the curtains and the pillow using the extra fabric were enough!) but the bench near the window is a very odd size and it was going to be like $200 to order a custom-fit cushion… so. Yeah. Bring on the fabric glue and green foam stuff!

(A tutorial on how I made the bench cushion is forthcoming. Promise.)

Anyway. So! Two months later, and it’s done…ish. New desk (thanks to my childhood friend Joy for the last minute coupon!), cozy windowseat, lovely green walls. And a little shelf above the window for knick-knacky stuff.

Even Sleeping Beauty stopped by to give her approval on the new window seat. It was a hit.

(I randomly found that yellow pillow on super-low-clearance at Target and it is PERFECT. I LOVE WHEN THAT STUFF HAPPENS!)

But, you know, because I’m me, it’s not quite done yet. There’s still the question of the Corner Of Ugly & Outdated Crap.

office: after

Why yes, that IS a CD tower filled with late-90s rap and alternative music CDs. Any takers? And the bookshelf isn’t really necessary anymore- I have a bag of books in my car to donate to the library and only kept a few books behind. And now I have a Kindle so Real Books are beneath me (ha) and plus, I’m not really a re-reader. So. I have a plan for the bookshelf (a makeshift closet-type thing for Maggie’s dress up clothes. OH YES. IT WILL BE AWESOME.) and a semi-plan for where to put the books- I’m envisioning some long white shelves on the wall above the left side of the desk.

And that chair is going as soon as I can find a smaller, less obnoxious one that is comfortable to sit in and doesn’t cost a million dollars (roughly).

So. Work in progress! But for now, it’s Done Enough. And I love how it turned out, I gotta say. I love that we have a usable room (I know the before pictures make it look perfectly usable but that was only after I cleaned out the closets and made room for the PILES OF JUNK that had accumulated in the corners and on the window seat. And I only did THAT because I needed to paint and didn’t want to kill myself on old picture frames.) and I loooove the wall color (Guacamole by Olympic, in case you were wondering)

Now I just have to convince myself that working in there is more appealing than working on the couch in my pajamas. That’s gonna be a hard sell.

Pull the curtains on that window seat, grab a book (or e-reader) and a mug of tea and you’ve got MOMMY’S PERFECT HIDEAWAY.

Pottery Barn! I’ve never purchased anything from there (pretty pricey) but I have to say, VERY impressed with the quality. And for wooden desks, for anything other than cardboard, you’re gonna pay. It is HEAVY and has really nice drawers with filing bars for hanging folders, etc. Happy with the purchase!
