Snow White Extravaganza

So yesterday was Maggie’s birthday 4th party. You guys… it was a lot of fun. A TON of work getting everything ready (made even more complicated, of course, by the 6 month old baby sister she has!) and woo, boy are kids’ birthday parties expensive these days. I started planning things over a month ago because I know my time (and energy!) these days is unpredictable. And the past week was filled with last minute trips to the craft store and party store and panicking about not having enough food for nearly 40 people, I mean, I’m glad everybody we invited can come but FORTY PEOPLE ZOMG!

I got a little stressed a few times, I’ll admit.

But seeing her face light up when she opened the Snow White dress that morning? And watching her play with her friends and dance and eat cake and yes, PRETEND TO EAT A POISONED APPLE AND DIE?

Worth it.

Some pictures from the day, because DUH.

First- these were the invitations. I found a princess card template on Etsy, got it customized, and ordered 4×6 prints online. Way better (and cheaper!) than a couple of packs of generic invites from the party store.

As the kids arrived, they each got a mirror to decorate (‘Mirror, Mirror on the wall….’). At first, my idea was to have them decorate real mirrors… but as I stood in the craft store holding SHARP, FRAGILE HUNKS OF GLASS that I was about to HAND TO A BUNCH OF SUGARED-UP KIDS, I started to re-think this one. Then I got lucky and wandered down an aisle that had thick paper cut-outs with mirrored sections on them. PERFECT! And only $1! SCORE.

Lots of glitter glue and stickers and jewels. Some very nice creations, we were impressed.

After that I forced the kids to play a couple of apple-related games which they tolerated, heh. Find the hidden poisoned apples in the living room, pass the poisoned apple (instead of hot potato).

In the middle of the game playing, Maggie decided to take a bite of one of the apples and ‘pass out’ on the floor.

Seriously. SHE DID THIS. Without anyone prompting her.

Oy. You guys. The drama I see in my future with this girl.

Then the kids ran around and played for a while. The girls put on a Dress Up Princess Parade for us (totally their idea). Hilarious and adorable, all of it.

Then there was a blur of food and gifts and cake.

Oh, THE CAKE.

I did not make this cake (oh how I would love to take credit for it! ha) We ordered it from a small bakery in our town. A Snow White-themed cake and cupcakes. Not only did it all look completely amazing, it was delicious, too.

Maggie loved it.

While everyone was eating their cake, we settled into the living room to watch the video I created with pictures from the past year, set to tear-jerking music, BECAUSE OF COURSE I DID. It’s become a tradition each year (except for last year when I completely forgot to show it because I had Pregnancy Brain and was still distracted about the empty piƱata incident) You can watch the past videos here: Birthday #1, Birthday #2, Birthday #3. I’ll be sharing Birthday #4 tomorrow :)

The party was a success. With twelve kids running around (ranging in age from 1 year to 11 years old), you just never know quite what to expect. But everyone got along, nothing was broken, and there were only a few tears (socks + wooden floors + running + sugar, whoops) From what I could tell, everyone had a great time, even the grown-ups! And my house was in awesome shape last night when everyone was gone, many many MANY thanks to my mom for that. Seriously. The woman is a A Machine and cleaned up all the leftover food, dirty dishes, empty pop cans… all while I sat on the couch with the birthday girl and watched videos of her as a baby.

Which was time well-spent, obviously.

  4. You are such an overachiever. I’m bummed we missed it (especially since we were just plain stuck in the airport at the time), in part because I could have given you grief about being an overachiever for an extended amount of time.

  6. You’re such a thoughtful mama. You know your daughter and her friends well. You took time to plan a really great party. And it’s clear little Maggie is having such a great time. I should probably take notes, otherwise, I’ll wind up throwing the two year olds out back with the beer and the 30-somethings inside with the toys. =)
