oh technology

So my 3 year old laptop that I use for my LIFE up and died this weekend.

Yes, that sounds a little dramatic, I know. But seriously- with just 8 weeks or so before I need to be Done With Work before Baby Girl arrives, this is not good timing. I have DEADLINES, COMPUTER. I mean, I kind of knew I would need to buy a new laptop in a year or so- these things have lifespans, after all- but I was hoping that I could make it at least until my maternity leave and then I could save up and get one when I came back to work. But no. Boo.

Dan tried his best to revive it, but the graphics card- for the 2nd time- is fried. And replacing it would mean replacing the entire motherboard- AGAIN- and that’s just not worth doing at this point. We have 2 backup computers in the house, but they are old. Like, REALLY, REALLY old. The desktop we have is over 9 years old and amazingly, it’s still working. Sorta. And the old laptop we have works okay, but it has absolutely zero software on it and tends to overheat and crash. (Plus, it was Super Cranky about connecting to our internet yesterday- but Dan fixed that so I can at least get to email and write this blog post. WHAT A RELIEF, I KNOW. ha)

So anyway. Long story short, I’m off to buy a new laptop. Preferably today, if possible. I don’t have time to wait for one to ship from anywhere, so ordering a custom one is a last resort. There is one I found (hopefully in stock!) that will fit my needs so I’m going to check it out today. Then spend 8,298,287 hours transferring thousands of files and installing a bajillion programs. And then- THEN!- I can get back to work.

I’m just thankful that we have the means to replace it so easily, because seriously? As a one-woman-show running a business? What the heck would I DO??

In other news: my belly is huge and my kid is adorable. The end :)

Just a small splinter in the slide down the electronic banister of life. :)

Yikes!! I’m so glad you have the means to replace it too. Scary that something so expensive can just DIE one day, especially when it is your livelihood. So excited about your new little girl on the way!! :-)

oh I know- and there was no warning at all. Graphics card just gone. And last time this happened, the entire guts needed replaced (because apparently it’s all one, very expensive piece, AWESOME) Plus, it would take weeks to ship it and get it fixed, time I don’t have. So! New shiny laptop for me! heh

I think I’m moving to the woods. LOL

Ugh, that’s my biggest fear. I got a new laptop in April, thank goodness…I hope I get to wait a few years to get another!

Thankfully all my files are safe (hard drive is fine, plus I use Carbonite for backup) but it’s the tools & software I need to actually do the work, ha. So yeah, not good timing, but hopefully by tomorrow I’ll have my new one and all will be well!

Oh, I’m exactly the same when it comes to laptops dying – you really don’t know how much you use them until they go kaput!! Hope you manage to find a decent laptop!!
