recipe: chocolate bark

I made this special treat over the weekend as a gift for Maggie’s daycare teachers- in cute little bags, it seemed to be quite a hit when she took them to school today. Thanks to my mom for the instructional lesson last weekend (she made peppermint bark.)

Not only is this super-easy and yummy, but it’s very flexible. You can make it with whatever you want- white chocolate, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, BLUE chocolate (YES, I saw blue and orange chocolate at the grocery store and just… ew. I don’t think I could eat it.) And instead of pretzels and peanuts, you could do almonds or no nuts or whatever you can dream up. The general process is the same, the ingredient possibilities are boundless!

(Only I can make melted chocolate DRAMATIC.)

I used three ingredients: chocolate, pretzels, and peanuts.

I found the chocolate melty-discs (technical name.) in the produce section of my grocery store. Yeah. Apples! Carrots! Onions! CHOCOLATE!

Totally makes sense.


I don’t have a double boiler in my kitchen stash, so I made one with 2 large pots that just happen to fit together nicely for this purpose.

You could probably get away with NOT using a double boiler setup, but I tend to get distracted while cooking and I’m also impatient so I always turn the flame too high and I would totally scorch the pan.

After a few minutes, the discs start to get all melty and gooey.

While the chocolate melts, spread out some wax paper or parchment paper onto some cookie sheets. I’d say one bag of chocolate discs is enough to cover one cookie sheet. I had three bags because Maggie has 6 teachers. Plus I made some extra because I LOVE CHOCOLATE.

And… we’re melted!

Turn the burner off (or on low, if you’re worried about the chocolate setting up too quickly while you mix in your ingredients). And start adding stuff!

There’s really no measuring or rhyme or reason to it. If you like more chocolate than ‘stuff’, just add a little bit. Or if you like it packed full of goodies, keep going. Get creative! Be free!

I went for middle of the road because I’m boring and safe.

After you’re all mixed up, plop the mixture onto one of the cookie sheets.

Yes I said plop. And I realize that word combined with this picture is just… um… well, good thing this tastes like chocolate!

Spread the mixture out until it’s relatively thin. You’re going to want to be able to break it into pieces pretty easily, so thinner is better.

Let it harden. This might take a while. And really, there’s no rush to get it done. You can go read a book, watch a movie, or play outside in the snow (like I did!) And while it’s setting up, you can always sneak some Test Pieces from the edges. You know, because you’re doing some intense Quality Control Analysis. With spreadsheets and stuff.

Once it’s all hardened, break it up into random pieces and you’re done!

Chocolate Peanut Pretzel Bark
  1. 1 bag of melting chocolate
  2. 1 bag of pretzel sticks
  3. 1 small can of salted peanuts
  1. Melt chocolate in a double boiler. Stir in pretzels and peanuts- as much or as little as desired! Pour mixture onto cookie sheets lined with wax paper. Spread evenly and allow to cool. Break into pieces and serve.

    The fact that the chocolate melty discs were in the produce section means they’re GOOD FOR YOU, right? :)

    Anyway – YUM. I’m definitely going to have to try this, except without the nuts. Thanks for the recipe!

    Looks delicious! And so easy!!! I am gonna have to try this out. Our store doesn’t sell the Chocolate Melty Discs of Wonder but I think I could substitute almond bark?

    looks awesome!

    I made chocolate covered pretzel rods and when I ran out of pretzel rods, I stirred in some creamy peanut butter and some cheerios and scooped it out on waxed paper.. Turned out YUMMY!

    I did this with white chocolate chips, popcorn and crushed candy canes. I had 18 cups of popcorn. It did not last 1 hour. So so so good. MMMmmmmmmmmmm chocolate.

    Chuck bought me white chocolate melty discs and I was able to melt it in the microwave!!! This looks soo good. I’ve always wanted to make the peppermint bark and I might have to try it soon.
