ho ho ho! Santa on a fire truck!

I wrote at Halloween about how much we love our new neighborhood. When we moved here in August, we were pleasantly surprised with how friendly and welcoming everybody was- quite a difference from where we used to live.

Now that it’s winter and gets dark before dinnertime, we haven’t seen many of our neighbors aside from quick waves as we drive past in our cars. But last week, we got a note in our mailbox about a neighborhood event this week. Santa was coming! In a fire truck! And Maggie would get to see some of her friends she’s been missing since summer.

The note mentioned something about giving a present to the organizers for Santa to give to your kids. I didn’t think much of it- thinking it wasn’t that big of a deal, we’d just go and check it out, get a candy cane, say hi to Santa. Very casual.

WELL! I was incorrect! Apparently this whole thing is a pretty big deal! And I felt like a huge meanie when Santa started calling kids up to the fire truck, ONE BY ONE, and letting them climb up INTO THE TRUCK, sit on his lap, and then he’d give them a present. Maggie was amazed! And we knew if we didn’t let her take part, we’d feel horrible.

So while the other kids were taking their turns, Dan snuck away while Maggie was distracted by playing with the kids and ran home in the 20 degree weather to grab a DVD from Maggie’s present stash (locked away in our spare bedroom until tomorrow night!) Our neighbor who helped organize the whole thing was nice enough to put her gift into the rotation, and soon after, her name was called.

She climbed right up there and chatted with Santa. These pictures actually look like she’s scared, but she totally wasn’t. She had an entire conversation with him. I couldn’t hear it, but it was probably about dollhouses.

she was actually enjoying herself

(There are more pictures in my Flickr stream.)

Then of course, there was the present. I think her face says it all.

pretty sure she peed herself

(It was ‘Finding Nemo’, which she immediately wanted to go home and watch. ha)

The whole thing was totally fun. I’m SO glad Dan was willing to run all the way home and sneak back a gift for her. She’s only going to be young enough to believe in the magic of Christmas and Santa Claus for a little while, and we need to enjoy it.

How fun! You guys found such an awesome neighborhood, what a great place for your kids to grow up!

I love that picture with Maggie’s face all wide-eyed and excited about the gift. Totally worth the freezing cold run – good job, Daddy. ;)

I love the whole “Santa on a firetruck’ thing. My cousin’s neighborhood does it, and we invite ourselves every year. Looks like she had a blast!

Next year, I’m totally coming. I’ll have my husband sneak in a gift for me. Imagine SANTA’s surprise when I leap into his lap. I promise, though, we’ll keep our chit-chat to dollhouses and whatnot. =)

    Merry Christmas!
