snow bunny

Today was the first time Maggie has ever played in the snow. She’s almost three. We live in Pittsburgh.

Doesn’t that seem weird?

There are reasons, though. Her first winter, she wasn’t even a year old yet when it was snowy. The few times we had snow, we were either busy or she was sick or it was way too cold for a baby to be out there.

Then there was last year. Well… you can just see for yourself.

not liking this.

It didn’t go very well.

This morning we woke up to a beautiful blanket of snow. I’m not sure how much, exactly- it snowed most of the night and during the day today. We tried to take her out this morning before we left for a Santa breakfast with some friends, but there was some major freaking drama over her gloves and she couldn’t get them on and wouldn’t cooperate when we tried to help and OH MY GOD PEOPLE, ANYONE NEED ANY FREE BIRTH CONTROL? If only I’d had the meltdown on video, I’d be rich.

So no snow-playing this morning (PUNISHMENT! boy did she hate that.) and then we were gone until naptime. She finally woke up from her nap around 5 and Dan decided to take her out while I made dinner. It was dark, but apparently it didn’t matter.

She loved it.

not hating it.

making a snow castle

I only took a few pictures because the pizza was in the oven and OH YEAH, it was cold out there, but I watched from the window as she made snow angels, built snow castles, and even went down the hill in her sled all by herself, arms raised up over her head and giggling.

I think it’s safe to say she’s over her fear of snow. Good thing, too, because Dan was really needing a playmate.

  1. So nice Dan has someone to play with in the snow.

I bet she’ll be more cooperative tomorrow morning, now that she knows what she was missing.

We’re up to about 2 feet here in Baltimore. Nothing to do here but live-blog the storm. And watch the Pens, of course.

  2. Today was Eleanor’s first time in the snow too. And all of her snow gear has not arrived yet but she was rocking the rain boots. Nice to know we are not the only snow slackers. We had a meltdown over the snow shovel being too big for her to operate (oh, the injustice!) but it was otherwise very, very fun.

  3. Aww, I’m glad she had fun! How cute! I think little kids playing in the snow is one of the cutest things ever. Being all bundled up like little snow puffles is so adorable. I used to love when my dad pushed me on the sled and made snowmen with me when I was little.

  4. Man I wish we lived closer, our girls have so much in common. Also tears last year when we tried to go sledding. Also loving the snow this time around. Also having made meltdowns over mittens!!!

  5. Lincoln loved the snow last year, haven’t had him out yet this year. If he loves it, we’ll have to get them together so they can play in it together!

  6. Haha, the last picture is definitely the best.

  7. Oh too darn cute – my oldest was exactly the same way. MAJOR meltdown anytime snow would get in her boots and under her mittens. Kind of inconvenient when you are PLAYING in the snow…Glad she is working through it!

  8. When Abby was about 17 months old, we went sled riding in our back yard with her, and though a little tentative about it, she liked it. Then, on one ride down our hill with me, we hit the edge of the patio with the sled. (It stuck up about an inch.) It stopped us very fast & hard, and we slid forward, and Abby’s leg got jammed against the front of the sled.

She couldn’t walk for a few days; I felt AWFUL! Fortunately, little kids are made of rubber and silly putty, so she was fine after a week or two (confirmed by a hospital visit on the day of incidence, with X-rays and all), but after that, she did NOT go out to play in the snow very much that year, and no more sled riding AT ALL.

Most fortunately (“Most Excellent!” – Bill & Ted, anyone?), she doesn’t remember that now, or it doesn’t matter to her anymore, because she absolutely LOVES playing in the snow now. I’m very glad I didn’t traumatize her for life with that incident.

    • oh geez, how terrible! I can only imagine how awful you felt- trying to have fun with your kid and then they get hurt (has happened a few times with us- though not quite as dramatic!) I’m glad she was okay and not permanently scared!!
