Thank Your First Commenter Day

Guess what today is!??! It’s Thank Your First Commenter Day! (idea and link found via the lovely Jen- who is becoming quite the inspiration for my blog posts lately, apparently!)

Blog comments are The Best. I suppose I should say that I write this blog for me, and to an extent, I do. But I also love love love the feedback from my wonderful readers. You guys are tons of fun, making me laugh and laughing along with me, offering advice when I ask for it, sharing your own stories about your weird and adorable kids, and making this whole blogging thing way more fun. If all my words were put out into the world without a response, that would be kind of a bummer, you know?

So my first commenter. This is actually an interesting one for me, because I’ve been blogging since BEFORE BLOG COMMENTS EXISTED. I kind of wish I was kidding, because it makes me feel really OOOLLD. I started on Blogger back in 2000 (muted.com!) and from what I remember, comments weren’t even an optional feature yet. It wasn’t until I switched my blog over to Greymatter, a simple, free self-hosted blogging software. So it was nearly a year into my first blog before I had my first comment. I’m pretty sure I had readers before then- I had a guestbook! and message boards! LORDY, I WAS AM SUCH A WEB GEEK.- but on April 1, 2001 I received my first blog comment.

And, as you can see: IT WAS FROM MYSELF.

How incredibly, pathetically poetic.

But my first comment NOT from myself was from someone named Andrea- no URL and it’s an email address I don’t recognize. But thanks Andrea, wherever and whoever you are! (Incidentally, the 2nd comment there is from Daia, who now has her design portfolio here and on Twitter here. After all these years, we’ve still kept track of each other. CA-RAY-ZEE!)

In 2005, I moved my blog from muted.com to this site- jayesel.net. And, even though it was 5 years later, I still had to give myself some comment love right off the bat. (SUCH a narcissist!) My first ‘real’ comment was from Crissy! (She saw my link in her referrers when I was testing the new site before I officially launched it and took a sneak-peek!) She’s another long-time bloggie friend of mine and smiled when I realized she was my first blog commenter. We’ve stayed in touch for a LONG time on the internet, through college and now through our first babies. Thanks for the first comment, Crissy!

So go give your first commenters some love during this Thanksgiving (in the US) week!

  1. My very first commenter was a Pittsburgh mom who disappeared a few weeks after finding my site. Like, she wrote something bad about her sister on her site, and then vanished, deleted blog and all. I still wonder about her . . . I’m thinking there was some sort of epic battle that went down.

I clicked around on Textlog for a bit and then…HAHA! Something like 5 posts in was a post about… ME.. I’m seriously dying. Oh man, those were the days. Except, unfortunately, that pregnancy didn’t last, but still. Takes me back.

  3. When I started blogging in the early 00’s, I didn’t get any comments – in fact, most of the time I begged for them!! So the first comment I received was probably from a friend of mine who I’d coerced into making me seem more “popular” – so embarrassing now because I don’t really care about comments, but I was only 14/15!

  4. I love that you left yourself your first comment, I considered doing that back in the day. Actually, I’ve left myself comments on fairly recent posts. I don’t know if that makes me a loser or not.
