I’m a few days late getting my butt in gear (am I the only one who feels like they’re perpetually behind? ARGH.) but I have a new pink header for Pink for October – Breast Cancer Awareness month. (You might need to refresh a few times if you can’t see it.)
Years ago- eight? nine? not entirely sure how long ago it was- Dan’s aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer. She beat it, but just this summer it was discovered she had a malignant tumor in her spine. Apparently once you’ve been a breast cancer patient, any recurrences- regardless of where they are in the body- are considered breast cancer. (Is this true? Can anyone corroborate this fact?)
She’s a single mother with a 13 year old son, living over 1,000 miles away from all of her family here in Pittsburgh. Dan’s grandmother has been there with her since the beginning of July, caring for her through surgeries and treatment and numerous hospital stays. To say it’s been a really rough couple of months for her would be understating it quite a bit. We are all hoping and praying that she continues to improve every day.
Before I became a web designer and a mom, I worked in cancer research. Specifically lung cancer, but we worked closely with some breast cancer projects and used a lot of the research in breast cancer for our studies. The four years I worked there gave me hope and confidence that someday- some day soon- breast cancer will be something we talk about in the past tense. Like polio. Or small pox.
In addition to early detection (are you doing your monthly self-breast exams, ladies?? and if you’re over 35 years old, are you getting a mammogram each year?), the key to it all is Research, Research, Research. And of course, money is required for that.
Last year I donated my (pathetic!) earnings from my blog ads for the month of October to Susan G. Komen For The Cure. And this year I’m doing it again. I don’t make a ton of cash from my ads, but I’m hoping this month will be a pleasant surprise and I can send a nice donation.
So I need your help! Click click click around my site! Get those page views up! If you need somewhere to start, check out the archives. Or, at the bottom of each post, there is a ‘More Posts Like This’ section that will get you on your way to reading some older stuff (which might be especially of interest if you’re new to my little blog home)
And I’ll be trying to do my part and post more often so you all have something to read (or at least something to look at- picture posts!)
Happy clicking! :)
