We found a house.
We actually put the offer in last Wednesday, but between not being sure the outcome of that until Friday afternoon (Thursday and Friday were AGONY, waiting to hear back!) and also the rush to get OUR house on the market… the last week has been a little crazy. So I haven’t had a chance to sit down and articulate my thoughts and feelings on the whole thing. And to be honest, I wasn’t even sure how I felt about it all.
This whole moving thing came about a lot earlier than we had planned. There are a few factors that led us to start looking at houses. There has been Some Talk about A Possible Baby Number Two in the coming year (maybe. MAYBE.) Our house now is fine, but we’re starting to feel the squeeze on space, especially as Maggie gets older and louder and her toys get bigger. And with me trying to run a business out of the house, 3 bedrooms and a living room is just not cutting it anymore. Plus, the market in our area is surprisingly very good for both the price range we’re selling in and the price range we were looking to move into, so we thought we’d dip our toes in and see what happened. We don’t need to move, so there was no pressure, but it sure would be nice to find something awesome at a good price, wouldn’t it?
Of course we started looking casually, and like I figured would happen, it turned into about 6 weeks of open houses every weekend and 1 evening each week with our agent touring houses. Probably 20? 30 total? Lots. It reminded me of trying wedding dresses at one point- they all start looking the same and blending together. “I liked that white one you tried on… you know, the one with the satin? And the beading? And the skirt?” Except with houses its: “What about that one with the floors? And the windows? And that one with the roof was nice.” *HEADDESK*
We went back to look at two houses a second time. The first one that we gave a second look ended up being (for us) too pricey for the amount of work it needed. It was a great house- awesome floor plan, great space, nice yard, in the school district we want. But some of the finish work was questionable (we all noticed a few slopey places in the floor while walking around and um, I’m sorry, but no. NOT worth the risk for a huge mortgage. Thanks.) and unless the price dropped A LOT, we were moving on. That night we also visited The House. We went back again and had no second thoughts, so we made an offer… and amazingly, they accepted (not without a counteroffer, but that was cool with us. We agreed to it.)
I say ‘amazingly’ because the whole thing hinges upon us selling our house. Most sellers won’t do that- especially in this market where some houses sit for months on the market without an offer. But things are just about perfect for selling our house, and both our agent and theirs recognize that. So after 2 days of waiting and basically trying to talk myself into not liking the house anymore (it didn’t work) in case they turned us down, we were pleasantly surprised.
We really really love this house. It’s in a cute little neighborhood, in the school district we wanted, has an AWESOME. YARD., and hardly needs any work inside. I say hardly because it does need some big projects: the basement is unfinished and the deck is… well, it’s kind of lame. heh. But the rest of the house is great. Hardwood floors, nice paint colors, great cabinets, big rooms, NO WALLPAPER TO REMOVE. After all the projects we’ve done over the past 5 years, knowing we can just move in and get settled without tearing things apart right away? Makes me very, very happy. And compared to some of the Crap we saw over the past month or so, as soon as we walked in, we knew this was a good one.
(Several of you have asked on Twitter, but I am not posting any pictures of the new place until it’s Official Official- meaning we have a contract on our house. I can’t help it, I’m superstitious! But stay tuned!)
After finalizing the agreement with the sellers, we spent Sunday cleaning and organizing and hiding junk and touching up paint and signing listing agreements and taking pictures of the house with our agent. Today, I came home from the grocery store, and this was in our front yard:
