It’s fairly well known among my family that I like to drag my birthday out for more than just one day. Dan’s mom and I have a joke about our ‘Birthday Months’ where whenever we want something, we just say ‘HEY! It’s my Birthday Month!’ It started out as just a Birthday Week, but now it’s totally a month. And our husbands are suckers and they fall for it every time (Hi Honey! LOVE YOU!)
My Birthday Month this time around started in March when I ordered my long-coveted Canon XSi. I’d been wanting one of these babies for like FIVE years and decided in the fall that when I turned 30, I was sooo getting one. I saved up and ordered it. It arrived mid-March and I happily accepted the gift. That I bought for myself. Which was technically from Dan but really from me since I made the purchase. But he gets credit- yay for him!
My actual birthday was last Tuesday. The day itself was pretty normal. MyGym in the morning with Maggie, then home for lunch and naptime. The only difference between my Birthday Tuesday and a Regular Tuesday was that instead of working while she napped, I played XBox. For TWO WHOLE UNINTERRUPTED HOURS. It was strange and lovely. Then Dan brought home Olive Garden for dinner (Mama doesn’t cook on her birthday, thanks!) and then headed to Cold Stone for my free birthday sundae (Vanilla with Snickers!)
Since this was a big birthday milestone (in other words: I’m Old now.), Dan wanted to take me out somewhere special. So we got his parents to come over and babysit (Would you believe they THANKED us for letting them babysit? We are beyond lucky, people.) and we headed downtown to have dinner on Mount Washington and ride the incline. The weather that night was fantastic. And of course I took my camera along- got some good shots of the city.
My mom’s birthday is just three days after mine. There is a tradition in our family that each person gets to have a birthday dinner and my mom will cook whatever the Birthday Person chooses. However in this case, we usually share the day because a) I’m a Big Girl and I’m okay with sharing and b) my mom should NOT have to cook her own birthday dinner. So my sister offered to host the party at her house on Sunday night. We picked spaghetti and meatballs and it was delicious. Instead of birthday cake (not a big cake fan, myself) get this: my sister made individual, heart-shaped strawberry shortcakes. My heavens, they were amazing.
And of COURSE, there were gifts! I pretty much asked for either camera accessories or cash towards camera accessories. I wanted a bag for my camera and lenses, a more comfortable camera strap, a larger memory card… you get the idea. Me = Camera Geek. Well, not only did I get the adorable bag I wanted (Thanks Mom and Michelle and Dad and Michael!) and a nicer strap and some cash for other goodies, but my mom got me a little basket full of fresh herbs. Like- TO GROW myself and TO COOK WITH. Awesome. Basil, cilantro, and sage. I swear the woman is a mind-reader because not too long ago I thought to myself, ‘Self, you are constantly forgetting to buy more cilantro, why don’t you just get a plant and be done with it?’ My mom rocks.
So, lots of parties and yummy food and Happy Birthday To Me. That ends the Birthday Extravaganza. Right?
Guess what FINALLY came today? After being backordered for 5 weeks?
I wish birthdays came every month.
