hands, feet, and mouths, oh my!

    April 23rd, 2008 @ 8:12 pm

So! If you didn’t catch my Tweet this morning, we believe we have solved The Mystery of The Demon Child. She’s got Hand-Foot-Mouth disease. The name makes it sound absolutely, completely disgusting, and my sister and I talked about how it conjures up an image of someone gnawing on their dirty foot. But really? It’s basically a fever that turns into a rash. And apparently some nasty blisters in the mouth and throat, which explains the extreme fussiness and sleepless nights. About 5,928 kids at daycare have either Hand-Foot-Mouth disease or Fifth Disease right now. I love group childcare.

Maggie doesn’t seem to have an incredibly severe case of it- just a few blisters around her mouth, and a smattering of a blistery rash on her shins and calves. She feels a little like she might have a fever now and then, but I took her temperature tonight and it was 99.6, so it’s very mild. And she slept pretty well last night, only waking at 2 for about an hour in which we snuggled quietly on the couch. And, compared to the night before, IT WAS HEAVENLY. She’s still really tired today. She took 2 over-1-hour naps at daycare, which she NEVER does (there have been days where she slept for 25 minutes there!) And she fell asleep all by herself tonight for bedtime, which hasn’t happened since last week.

The problem now is that Dan is sick. Or getting sick. He was planning to work at home today (they are doing some construction at their office so he thought it would be quieter at home today since Maggie would be at daycare) but he never really got out of bed. He spent the entire day either passed out on the couch, or passed out in bed. He got up only to answer his work phone a few times while he sat at the computer with his forehead in his hands. Sore throat, headache, extremely tired. Basically, he’s just completely exhausted. He was in Fargo for 11 days working long hours, then came home to Sickfest 2008. Poor guy.

So here I am. Both my turds are asleep by 8pm. I have the computer, the tv, and the living room all to myself. A girl could go crazy with freedom like this!

There I was, feeling all sorts of bad for you and preparing to type encouraging words. Then I got to the last sentence. You don’t need my pity, you need to party it up in the living room! Go quiet time!

Well WOOOT for quiet time!! :)

Sometimes it’s a relief just to know *something* was causing the lack of sleep and fussiness……..not that you want your baby to be sick but…you KWIM?

Aw… poor Maggie, and Dan (can’t forget about him). I swear, DayCare-itis will be the death of us all.

And yeah, go make popcorn, watch bad tv… enjoy the freedom you are experiencing of having the remote to yourself. I’m having a total moment of envy. Lucky, lucky you!

Ugh, I had Fifth’s Disease when I was 12. Caught it at school. Or maybe it was from my brother…who got it from school. Anyway, at 12 it was NO FUN. I woke up in the middle of the night, my entire body COVERED in hives/rash. Poor Maggie. :(

Allie had hand-foot-mouth once. I freaked out thinking it was something terrible, and then it ended up being that. I hope Maggie is feeling better.
