my daughter, the genius.

I know, I know: every parent thinks their kid is like, The Smartest Child On The Planet. So just bear with me while I brag for a few minutes ;)

For the past week or so, Maggie has just been astounding us with the amount that she’s learning. It’s to the point where she’ll whip out a new word that we haven’t even explicitly taught her. Like ‘wet’ or ‘color’ or ‘crayon’. Then there are the words I did teach her- ‘soft’, which she uses to describe her
‘blan-tet’ (blanket) and then she rubs the blanket against her cheek. Or ‘geen been’ (green bean) that Dan taught her last night at dinner.

But the major things I’ve noticed are not just words. She’s making associations. One evening last week, she and Dan were outside playing after dinner and it was getting dark (soooo early now, argh!) She looked up at the sky and said ‘Moon!’. It wasn’t the moon though- it was stars. So Dan corrected her and said, ‘No, those are stars.’ And she said, ‘Cwinkle Cwinkle cwittle tar…’

And I can now ask her to go get something- her shoes, her blanket, some socks, a book- and SHE DOES IT. It’s like I have my own personal servant now! THIS IS TOTALLY WHY PEOPLE HAVE KIDS. I’m so teaching her how to get Mama a drink.

She’s also learning the alphabet. She can count to 5, sometimes 6. She knows what a circle is. She asks for Aunt ‘Shell’. She pointed to a picture of an iPod in a magazine and said ‘goo-gic’ (music) and then put her ear up to the page (HOW FREAKING CUTE IS THAT??).

I know that all of these things happen for every kid. But this is MY kid. MY baby. A year ago, she wasn’t even really crawling yet.

yummy, shoes!

And now she’s thinking and processing and coming up with ideas all on her own. And collecting leaves in the yard.

  • Aw… it’s really cool when I think about reading your blog when you were pregnant, and when Maggie was a newborn, and now she is growing and doing all sorts of new things. You & Dan are great parents, and Maggie is definitely a smart cookie. :)

I loved the part about her putting up the picture of an iPod up to her ear – SO CUTE!

  • She is just too adorable! I am amazed at how fast she is progressing. When I started reading this post I had to stop myself and ponder “Wait, I thought she was…” and then I saw the picture and I knew I was right. I thought I was going mad but no, you just have a genius child!

@Melissa: I know, I almost fell off the bench outside when she did the iPod thing, totally cracked me up. It’s just so fun now watching all the things she’s learning. CONSTANTLY learning and doing.

  • Definitely a Gen Y kid! (Or Gen Z?!). When she asks for an iPod for Xmas, you’re in trouble.

  • It is awesome when all that stuff comes together. Bun is right about there too. She recently hugged a framed picture of herself and Monkey.

You learn more in your first two years than you do the rest of your life. And when you have kids you get to see that happen. So fun.

And I think I say this every time I comment: Your daughter is so cute!

@red pen mama: It really is cool when they start making connections with ideas and concepts… it’s like she has a little brain in there! I think the biggest shock is that it happens so fast, like I said, a year ago she wasn’t even crawling yet! Now she’s climbing up on the dining room chairs and coloring my ceramic tile in the kitchen WITH BLACK CRAYON. good times ;)

And thanks :) We think she’s pretty cute too, but I know we’re biased and can’t be trusted. LOL
