civic duty.

Today is a big day.
Regardless of what ’side’ you are on (and let me just tell you how much I feel like I’m in 3rd grade talking about all this ‘us’ and ‘them’ and ‘which side?’ crap. WE NEED A RELEVANT THIRD PARTY IN THIS COUNTRY SO BADLY.) you have to admit: it’s all rather exciting. Because regardless of which candidate comes out victorious today, history will be made. Think about it: either a woman or a black man will be in the White House. And that? Is kind of awesome. Fifty years ago- heck, even 20 years ago- neither scenario would have even been possible.
Voting as a right is such a ridiculous blessing. We have no idea how lucky we are to have the ability to have a say in who runs the country. From the local officials all the way up to the President of the United States. So when you voted today or last week (you DID vote, right?) or when you vote later today (you ARE going to vote, right?), I hope you do it responsibly. Do some research, find the candidate that best matches what you believe in. Don’t choose Candidate A or Candidate B because Sue McSomethingOrOther in the cubicle next to you says he’s the best. Or because that one actor you think is cute donated money to him. Or because someone told you something about the Other Guy that scared you, or you saw a stupid commercial on tv that contained a half-truth.
Go. Vote. Choose for yourself. Choose for our country.
And that concludes today’s soapbox session. Tomorrow I will resume pointless blather about my adorable kid and how she sings ‘Cwinkle Cwinkle cwittle tar’ every time she sees a star. And then I die from the Cuteness.

I voted. I’m glad to see most people really value the privilege to vote and are doing it.

You made a good point–research for yourself. We can’t count on the ads on TV (or most of the time even the news reporters) to give us the full truth on either candidate. My dad just made the comment the other day that voting is really hard work. And he’s right, if you want to make an informed decision.

Amen, sister!!
Can’t stand it when I hear people talking about who they are voting for and have no reason why they are voting for them! Argh, it’s crazy….this is our future president for goodness sake!!
Very exciting and I took my picture with my sticker on too!

This may seem childish of me… but I didn’t get a sticker this time =(
Well that and I didn’t get to use the machine… but that’s a whole other story.
PS.. Your blog looks very nice right now. (I am usually in RSS).

Has your fb been as bad as mine? Status after status just yelling at one another. I’m glad today is finally here, and I’m glad I researched and didn’t just vote for someone I was told to vote for.

Yep. Third party needed for sure. I am really sick of voting for the lesser of two evils … or the perceived lesser of two evils. Who really knows.

I voted!! I couldn’t wait either. I had to do some work before I could go and I wanted to go with my husband because it was his first time. We went together, voted the same, and now we’re watching Fox News together. We are sooo excited!

Great post. I do not like politics but I loooove being able to vote. And I’d love to see a strong, relevant third party. Maybe that will be the next big change in our lifetime, who knows?
I was so excited about the entire COUNTRY being so excited, that I was telling Oliver the names of the 50 states on our drive home today. It’s never too early to pass on the American spirit, right? :)
George grew up under Communism so we’ve been talking about voting and politics a lot, not even just discussing what’s going on but “Can you believe how awesome this is??” It’s truly a privilege. He can’t wait to become a citizen so he can vote in 2012!

First things first: your hair looks GREAT in this picture!
And what an awesome post. I think some people get so caught up in the media hype surrounding elections that they forget the most important part – that their voice COUNTS and they have the RIGHT to vote, unlike other countries. Regardless of the outcome, it truly is an amazing thing to be a part of.

I totally agree with you about the third party thing. Neither party represents me.
Fortunately, Obama does.
Mostly.

I wouldn’t be too excited about the 3rd party thing. I’m from Canada and we’ve had at least 3 parties at both the federal and provincial levels for a very long time. I guess I can’t really say that three parties is a bad thing, but in our last couple of elections we’ve ended up with two parties splitting the vote so the 3rd party ends up winning even though more people didn’t vote for them than did. Know what I mean? Very frustrating. In our federal election last month we actually had 4 parties in the running across most of the country (the Green party is the fourth – not significant yet, but making progress), and in the province of Quebec there are five parties, yes, five. Craziness. There are bigger issues with our electoral system than just the number of parties, but I’m just saying that there is a downside to having more options.
