This weekend was supposed to be fun and relaxing. It’s Labor Day! The unofficial end of Summer! A three-day weekend! We had plans for most of the weekend, but still, THREE DAYS! It all stretched out in front of us and I was very much looking forward to it.
Now, before I delve into the ridiculousness of this weekend, mostly, we DID have a good time. But unfortunately it was overshadowed by puke in my car, a toddler who refused to sleep at night, and two very, very tired parents.
Saturday we had a boating afternoon with Dan’s dad. (His mom went to a concert with some friends, so we thought we’d keep him company while he was a Bachelor for the day!) It was a gorgeous day- sunny and not humid, though it was a little hot in the sunshine. We spent some time wandering around the Point, and then got back in the boat to cross the river to check out the Rib Fest. We got some ribs, a pork sandwich and some corn on the cob and had ourselves a nice afternoon.
We made our way back to the boat and headed home. When we got to the dock, Dan took Maggie up to the car while I gathered up all of our things from the boat (Seriously? RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF STUFF needed for a 5-hour boating trip and a Toddler.) I got up to the car and Dan was wandering around the car, holding his temples with a pained expression on his face. He asked if I could drive home because he had a horrible headache. He had complained of one earlier in the day, but said it felt better after he ate. But now it was back with a vengeance.
He fell asleep in the car on the way home (Maggie didn’t, surprisingly) He woke up when we were almost home and said it was a little better. Then I noticed he was jiggling his leg and breathing very loudly… I asked if he was okay and he said ‘No, I feel like I’m gonna throw up.’
NOT words you want to hear when you’re driving a car.
I tried to find a place to pull over quickly, but unfortunately, I didn’t make it in time. And Dan couldn’t see straight because of his headache and in the panic, completely didn’t get the window down in time and… well… you can just guess the outcome of all that.
My first thought was food poisoning from the Rib Fest and then OH MY LORD, WE ALL ATE THE SAME THING, and then I had horrific visions of all three of us puking our guts out for the next 24 hours. Thankfully, that didn’t happen. He said he felt immediately better, but his headache was still bad. We got home, I took Maggie inside to get ready for bed, and he tried to clean my car out the best he could before coming in and crashing for the night.
Unfortunately, none of us got a very good night of sleep. I tossed and turned, feeling a little icky myself (wasn’t sure if it was the Power of Suggestion or legitimate issues from the Rib Fest pork BBQ??) and Maggie woke up every 2 hours. She was sweaty and cranky and just wanted to be held. It was a looong night.
We still aren’t entirely sure what the deal was with all of us. I think there may have been something in the food to make us all a little icky (Maggie and I both had some… um… ‘ISSUES’ on Sunday morning) As for Dan, we think he may be starting to get migraines. This has been happening every once in a while, splitting headaches, neck pain, nausea. And combining that with questionable pork and riding on a boat in the hot sun… it’s no wonder he violated my car with his vomit.
(SIDE NOTE: This is not the first time, nor the second time, that he has puked in my car. Oh no, this is #3. However, this time was not related to alcohol consumption, so I couldn’t get mad at him. And he is outside right this moment giving both of our cars a good scrubbing, so I have to give him credit for that. At least he doesn’t expect me to clean it up.)
Dan ended up not going to the previously-planned golf outing with his friends on Sunday morning, but we all felt well enough in the afternoon to make it to the party. And I’m glad we went- it was a great time! We usually only see most of these college friends once a year, so it was nice catching up. And now we’re all having kids and multiplying like rabbits- every year there is at least one person pregnant. This year there were two preggos, and one with a newborn- not to mention the infants and toddlers running around already! Soon we will be outnumbered. Very scary prospect!
The 45-minute drive home was crappy. Maggie whined and fussed most of the way. I was tired. Dan was tired. I went to bed by 9:30. Maggie woke up at 10:30 screaming her head off and had a runny nose. OH JOY. Dan was still up watching tv, so he stayed awake with her until almost 2am when she finally passed out in the pack and play. As soon as he climbed back in bed, she woke up again. This time I got up. Then she got up again around 4. Another very very long night.
This morning Dan had to go into work ON A HOLIDAY to install something for a customer. And he left me alone with Cranky Toddler Of The Year who whined for lunch and then threw just about everything on the floor and screamed at me for 3 hours.
So, let’s recap. My car smells like BBQ ribs, my kid has an apparent cold (WTH??) and is very very cranky, and none of us have slept more than 4 or 5 hours since last week.
I told Dan he’d better be prepared. One day he’s going to come home from work, I’m going to have a bag packed, and I will be disappearing for a few days. He won’t know where I’m going or when I’ll be back. I think he thought I was kidding. HA! Won’t he be surprised…
