the incredible shrinking woman

Some of you may have noticed my little blurb over there on the sidebar about my weight loss. At the beginning of September, I decided it was time to take some serious action to lose the rest of this baby weight that’s been hanging around. I had been working out more than I ever had before in my life, and I’d only lost 1lb (and zero inches- ZERO!) in almost 2 months. So something needed to change.

My mother-in-law has recently had great success with Weight Watchers, along with a few other people I know online and off. I have done the weight-loss thing before, back in 2003 when I lost 23 pounds. But I did it ‘on my own’, just tracking my daily food intake using a free online tool. It worked well, but it was very time-consuming to track my food each day, counting calories, entering amounts, etc. But I had heard some great things about WW online service, so I signed up and started tracking.

The first week was so hard. I was cutting my daily food intake almost in half, according to the points I had been eating. I WAS SO HUNGRY. But in one week, I lost 2 pounds. And then 2 more the next week. Wow. I had worked so hard for 2 months and lost practically nothing. In less than 14 days, I’d lost 4 pounds and I felt really good. I was also mixing in workouts here and there when I could- though not as often as I’d like with a baby and a business to handle, but I did my best. I’ve changed my shopping a little bit, trying to buy mostly fresh things from the produce section, and less pre-processed stuff (except for some WW meals now and then, they’re actually pretty good!) Our grocery bill has grown a bit because of the changes- who knew that buying healthier stuff would cost more?- but the extra cost is worth it.

One thing that I love about WW Online is their food tracking tool. The best part is that I can enter recipes- MY recipes- and it will automatically calculate the number of points in each serving (I just have to make sure I eat ONLY 1 serving!) So I really can eat whatever I want- just smaller amounts of it all.

I haven’t been perfect every day, and a lot of weeks I go over my recommended points. And these past 2 or 3 weeks have been so nuts that I’ve only remembered to track my food for a couple of days. But it’s obviously working okay for me, because in 2 months, I’ve lost 11 pounds. And several inches as well. I’m almost back down to the jeans size I was when I got pregnant, and I’m only 10 pounds or so from my pre-baby weight- and Maggie’s only 7 months old! Any moms out there will know: those first few months after having a baby, you feel pretty much the most unattractive you’ve ever felt in your life… at least I did. Which is funny because while I was pregnant, I felt beautiful and womanly, but afterwards I felt horrible. And I wasn’t prepared for that.

So I’m so happy and excited that this is working. I don’t know if I’ll renew or continue my 3 month subscription to WW, since I’ve got such a good start and I think I’ve actually re-developed those good eating habits I had before I was pregnant (because WHILE I was pregnant? I ate whatever I wanted and used pregnancy as an excuse, like we all do! hehe) My ultimate goal is to be at my pre-baby weight by Maggie’s 1st birthday, which I don’t think will be a problem at all. I still need to work out more (I haven’t done much the last couple weeks, unfortunately) but I’m working on it.

  1. Yeah! Loosing weight is such a difficult process. I hate dieting, which I totally need to do. Good luck with getting the rest of the baby weight off.

  2. Your post about WW gives me a light at the end of the tunnel!! You know how you said you felt after birth? Well getting pregnant only 6 months post-partum I feel like you said!! I already bought a double jogging stroller, and WW! I feel better I have a plan!!! Congratulations on the weight loss!! all the weight you lost I think I found it!!!!!!!

  3. You are rocking it!!!!

  4. yay! good job!

  5. Awesome!! I’m so happy this is working for you! :) I’m sure you will reach your pre-baby weight before Maggie turns one—and then the hard part will be keeping Dan away from your HOTTness so you don’t get knocked up again right away… heehee ;)

  6. The saying goes, it takes 9 months to make baby, and 9 months to lose the baby – so you are doing great! Well done so far and keep up the good work! I am trying to fend off the gaining of weight whilst quitting smoking at the moment, so I know how you feel! xx

  7. I hear endless good about weight watchers. I am intrigued.

    (Good! for you.)

  8. I did Weight Watchers about 3 years ago. Lost about 18 lbs… I am now at least 20 lbs from where I got to now! :( I did WW this summer for a bit, but dropped out… I’m inspired again.. That and my pants just seem to be getting tighter… I think I’m going the wrong way! I have some great WW recipes in my recipes page.. including the turkey jack chimichangas… and the ones around April 2005… Congratulations! And thanks for inspiring!

  9. I am so freaking proud of you! I always tell my husband the best way to lose weight it to eat less, not just work out more. Not that working out isn’t good, but the eating less makes ALL the difference!

  10. This is me all over. My kiddo was born in early March 2007 and I tried like crazy to lose the baby weight with limited success. I used to be able to just exercise the weight off, but I do not have the time anymore. I joined WW too. I’m about 6 weeks into it and down around 14 or 15 lbs (we’ll see tomorrow). It is amazing how much I used to overeat! I had no idea. I didn’t feel like I was chowing down bad things, but I know my portions were too big. I’ve still got a pretty decent amount to lose (and not just baby weight), but I do feel like I can do it.

Anyhow, just wanted to give you a shout-out. Your little girl is darling!!
