flashback

When I was on my little blog-haitus back in October, I still spent loads of time on the computer. (I mean, come on, if I could attach it as a body part, I probably would.) Most of it was client-work related, but I did take some time to get myself and my files organized. Because what’s more fun on a Saturday night than organizing your folders on your hard drive? NOT MUCH, that’s what.

While I was organizing away, I came across some old screenshots of websites I had made. Websites from 1998, people. That was like, a lifetime ago in Internet-terms. Before MySpace, before YouTube, before BLOGS, even (or at least before they became a household term) And apparently, it was before I could see color and use a computer because Good Lord, did I make some weird-lookin’ stuff.

And of course, I uploaded it all to Flickr. Because I don’t think I can call myself a web designer without owning up to my sordid past of cheesy websites with non-anti-aliased graphics and extensive use of frames. I uploaded some more of them this week (old designs from muted.com, from 1999-2006) but most of those aren’t all that bad. But the early ones? YIKES.

Let me just highlight a few of them for you:

This is the oldest one I have, it’s from 1998. I don’t even know what to say, really. It doesn’t even NEED words, I don’t think.

Jen's Junk - 1998

And this is just one of many of the cheesily-named, one-word title sites I created. I honestly don’t even remember what I had on these sites- it was before I had a blog. So what the heck did I even do with my site besides redesign it every other week when I should have been studying?

Here is a blindingly-red 404 error page:

There are more on my Flickr page, with criticism comments from me, of course.

I also remember most of the layouts from muted… and it’s a little startling to realize that you’ve been keeping up with someone’s life via the internet for almost 8 years.

    Things have definitely changed.
