why Maggie might never crawl

Words cannot express how much Maggie despises tummy time. She has never liked it. When she was just a few weeks old, I would put her on her belly and she would immediately start screaming. As time went on, she screamed less but still wasn’t happy about the whole thing. Now that she’s a little older, she’ll sort of cooperate, but not for very long. She has great head control while we support her sitting up, but she mostly refuses to prop herself up on her hands or arms when on her tummy. We entice her with toys and songs and I’ll get down on the floor and talk to her. We’ll even prop her up on her arms FOR her, and she just slowly lowers herself back down to the ground. It’s not that she CAN’T do it: it’s that she WON’T. Stubborn little girl!
If you don’t believe me, watch this. And pay special attention to how happy she is the instant Dan flips her over.

Hehehe. Incidentally, I never crawled, not once. As soon as I could sit up, it was “scooting” on my butt or nothing at all, until I walked.

Laura- We seriously think she might do the same thing. She LOVES to stand up, so I could easily see her walking at 9-10 months and completely skipping crawling. Which kind of makes me a little sad, because I’d love to see her little bum wiggling down the hallway as she crawls ;)

Maria is weird about tummy time too.. Sometimes she’ll pick her head up, other times she is content to just lay there with her head down… other times she gets so mad, she picks up her head. She also likes to suck on the blanket or mat face down and she is quite the drool machine then…

lol! She’s too funny. :) Don’t worry, she’ll be crawling and getting into things before you know it, and you’ll think back longingly on the days when she stayed in one spot…

My mom says I never crawled, just went straight to walking at nine months. Maybe Maggie shares my belief in, “Why crawl and hurt your knees when you can walk instead?” ;)

I think all infants HATE tummy time. Neither of my kids ever took to it, screaming the whole time in frustration, so I rarely ever put them on their stomach. But once they were old enough and strong enough to crawl, off they went, with no looking back. Although the crawling really only lasted a few weeks before they were trying to stand and walk.

Rylan will tolerate it but will grunt in irritation, but immediately is happy when she gets over. She has NO desire to flip herself over. AT ALL.
This video was darling.. LOVE IT! Thanks for sharing!
Poor babies, life is hard!

We didn’t do a lot of tummy time with our daughter. And she’s crawling around just fine (9.5 months, and zooming along beautifully). What we did (or I should say a friend of ours started it and we just followed suit), was to carry her around drapped over one arm. Her face was facing out, and she could ’see’ stuff but she had to raise her head to really be able to do it. So, it was like tummy time, but a cheat, because she thought it was more like cuddle time. Worked for us, and it seems to have worked for her. Because after we had been doing it for a couple of weeks, I put her down on the floor, and she raised herself up quite nicely. Can’t hurt Maggie to give it a try!

Kristin- We have actually started doing something like that- we have a reclining sectional couch, so we’ll lean back and put her on our chest, belly down. It helps a little bit- like you said, when they think it’s ‘cuddle’ time, they don’t hate it nearly as much!

My sister HATED tummy time as well. And walked at about 11 months with no crawling.

My nephew was the same way when he was younger; would scream and fuss and moan and groan about tummy time, and would be like a whole different baby when you turned him back over onto his back. However, he slowly got a little better about it until one day he started crawling at about nine months old.
So… you never know! But you’ll find out soon enough and then a whole new set of stresses and joys will be upon you with a mobile baby.
